There are a variety of different Yoga mats that come in all kinds of sizes, styles and shapes. Ideally when looking for a Yoga mat you want to find one that will not slide against the floor. To avoid sliding and slipping during the exercises most Yoga exercise mats have a sticky surface that helps it adhere to the floor. The length of the mat should be considered depending on your height and the type of exercises you perform. Yoga mats come in a variety of lengths so if you plan to do exercises where you lay on the floor you may want to consider purchasing a longer mat.
The thickness of the mat should also be considered when you make your purchase. Yoga mats typically come in three different thicknesses:
- 3/16 inch - ideally designed for those that need additional cushion during the Yoga exercises
- 1/8 inch - standard thickness for Yoga mats
- 1/16 inch - the thinnest of the mats and can be used as additional support under thicker mats or used for traveling
Even if you train at a health club you still should consider purchasing your own Yoga mat. You can never be too sure how sanitary the public facilities are and if you are going to be laying against a mat you might as well ease your mind knowing that it is your own.
