Looking for free weights and great dumbbell arm workouts?
One of the most common
and necessary accessories for home gyms are free weights and
dumbbell systems and sets. Depending on your goals, over time as your
strength increases you will most likely want
to add some additional weights and dumbbells to your home gym.
Most weights for home
gyms are sold separately and can add up
quickly in cost (over $1.00 per pound). Also keep in mind
that the majority of weight plates are priced and sold
individually. However, there are a few sets for weights that
you can buy that may give you a break on the overall price.
Before you make any major purchases, you will need to understand your
workout needs and whether or not the weights and dumbbells that you are
researching meets those needs.
Since the cost can add
up so quickly you will want to make sure that the weights or dumbbells
that you are looking into buying are going to last. There are
many options out
there arranging from cast iron plates to ones coated in
rubber. In addition, you may also want to invest in a rack to
conveniently store and add additional protection to your
weights.
While evaluating the
different weights and dumbbells available, you may want to
take in some of the
following considerations:
- Standardization - is the
weight made to fit your bar (are you using an Olympic or some other
type of bar)?
- How much space do you
have for your equipment? Will you need to buy a rack for your
weights and dumbbells?
- Durability - make sure
that your investment is going to last. Sometimes you get what
you paid for when it comes to durability.

Different Types of Plates -
 |
Plates
-There are a variety of styles and brands of plates to choose from when
adding weights to your home gym. Ideally you will want to
purchase Standard or Olympic plates (unless your home gym requires
something different). Weight lifting plates are over one
dollar per pound so you will want to make sure that whatever you
purchase is going to last.
Some of the weightlifting
plates that are available are cast iron plates, rubber coated plates
and Olympic plates. Rubber coated plates are nice since may
offer some protection for the floor or even the plates themselves (when
stacking multiple plates on top of each other).

Dumbbells - Like the weight plates, dumbbells come in
a variety of styles and brands as well. There are chrome,
rubber coated, cast iron and many other styles of dumbbells.
The one suggestion that we would make is to look into a dumbbell that
is not completely round. Basically you want a flat edge, like
the Hex Dumbbells, to keep the dumbbell from rolling away.
Also, the rubber coated dumbbells, like the weight plates, offer some
additional protection.

Racks and Trees - Weight and dumbbell racks and trees
(allow you to conveniently store the plates) offer the ability to store
and protect your investment. If you are looking into
purchasing a medium to large quantity of different weights and
dumbbells, we would recommend investing in a rack or tree.

Weightlifting
belts and gloves - Weightlifting belts are
important for protecting the lower back and preventing a
hernia. When doing heavy movements, such as squats, having a
weightlifting belt is well advised.
Weightlifting gloves add
additional support to the hands and prevent excessive calluses from
forming. Weightlifting gloves can also support your grip on
various exercises such as lat pull downs, bent over rows, shoulder
shrugs, and many more.
Note: Wrist
wraps are also great for heavy lifters. They will help
support your grip when lifting extra heavy weight.
