What is the difference between a used and refurbished treadmill?

Treadmills can range in prices from the low hundreds of dollars all the way up into the thousands of dollars. If you are on a limited budget and have your eyes on one of the more expensive treadmills, like the Precor models, then you may want to consider a refurbished treadmill.

Now there is a difference between a refurbished and a used treadmill. Used treadmills are like a used car, you may get a great deal and then again you may not.  Unfortunately, you just can’t be exactly sure what you are getting. This does not mean that you should never consider a used treadmill or cannot get a great deal on one; it just means that you will have to assume some additional risk when purchasing a used treadmill over a refurbished one.

A remanufactured, also called refurbished, treadmill is one that has been restored to a “like new” condition. A couple of great advantages for refurbished treadmills are that many of them come with a warranty and can be purchased at a discount up to 50% of the original price.

However, not all treadmill remanufactures are the same. Some of the big treadmill distributors, like Megafitness, have their own remanufacturing facilities to completely restore treadmills. By the time the work is done, the treadmill will look and work just as if it were new. To get a better understanding of what goes into a refurbished treadmill, lets take a look at the steps Megafitness takes to restore one.

1. The first step is that Megafitness will fully disassemble the treadmill
2. Once the treadmill has been disassembled, they will sandblast the frame to remove any imperfections
3. After the frame has been sandblasted a powder coat will then be applied to it
4. Now that the frame is complete, they will then, if necessary, rebuild the mechanical and electrical with brand new parts (matching the equipment specifications)
5. The next step is to finish off the treadmill exterior with paint and decals
6. And in the final step they will put the treadmill under a rigorous quality control exam to make sure that every is working as it should

Now as you can see, the amount of effort and work that goes into the Megafitness refurbished treadmills far exceeds anything that you can buy used. Keep in mind that not all remanufacturing facilities are the same. We obviously like Megafitness’s care for quality in their treadmills but no matter whom you purchase from just make sure that they live up to the same standards.

To sum everything up we feel that used treadmills can be good but a remanufactured one really does eliminate a lot of the risk. With a used treadmill you may end up with a diamond or a lump of coal, you just never know unless you are already in that business. Also you can pick up a great deal on a high quality refurbished treadmill like the Precor models for a fraction of the price.
