Total Gym Reviews

Most people by now are already more than familiar with the Total Gym home workout systems.  The exercise equipment has been around for quite some time now and has also grown in popularity due to their infomercial endorsements from movie stars Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley. Unlike traditional home gyms the Total Gym does not use weights for resistance, instead what it uses is your own body weight.  When you workout on the Total Gym you sit, kneel or lay down on a bench called the glideboard.  The glideboard rests on an incline plane which it rolls up and down on as you push and pull your own body weight.  The key to the glideboard is that it comfortably supports your body weight throughout the entire movement.  It not only minimizes the compression on your joints and spine during the workout, but also uses gravity and your own body weight as the resistance.

How does the Total Gym work?
One of the big questions that a lot of people may have is how in the world do you adjust the weight, or resistance, for the workout.  The Total Gym allows you to calibrate the resistance by simply lowering or raising the incline that the glideboard sits on.  In turn, this increases or decreases the amount of weight that you use in your workout.  Another key benefit is that the Total Gym also allows a full range of motion throughout the exercise.  Exercises can be performed while sitting, kneeling or laying down on the glideboard.  Not only do you strengthen the muscles but the design of the exerciser also allows you stretch the muscles as well. Keep in mind that this in not a one or two exercise machine.  Depending on which model is purchased, the Total Gym allows around 80 different workouts to be performed.

Can I track how much weight I am lifting with the Total Gym?

Another concern or question that some people may have is on how much weight they are actually lifting.  The Total Gym is an unusual exerciser that does not use traditional weights for the workout.  However, the exerciser does include a chart that helps you determine how much resistance you are actually using during the workout.  The chart takes into consideration your body weight, the machines incline level and whether or not you are using the pulley system.

Our recommendation for those considering the Total Gym
Overall the Total Gym is a good home gym for toning and modest development of the muscles.  However, if your interest swings more towards bodybuilding or serious muscle building then you would be better off looking at some of the more traditional home gyms that are available.  We personally feel that the Total Gym is really geared towards those whose  goals are more fitness related with overall health and toning.  If these goals reflect your interest then the Total Gym is something you may want to consider.
