If you have ever watched any
infomercials for exercise equipment then you are most likely are already
familiar with the Total Gym. The Total Gym, which is sponsored by
movie stars Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley, has been on the
market for some time. Unlike traditional home gyms, the Total Gym does not
use weights for resistance. Instead, the Total Gym exercise equipment is
designed to use your own body weight against gravity as resistance. When
you workout on the Total Gym you sit, kneel or lay down on a bench called
the glideboard. The glideboard sits on an inclined plane and rolls up and
down the plane as you push and pull your own body weight. The real key to
the glideboard is that it supports your body weight throughout the
movement. Your own body weight becomes the weight that you lift which in
turn minimizes the compression on your joints and spine.
How does the Total Gym work?
Now I am sure you are wondering
how you adjust the weight for your workout. The Total Gym allows you to
calibrate the resistance by simply lowering or raising the incline which the
glideboard sits at. In turn, this increases or decreases resistance of the
weight that you use in your workout. Another key benefit is that the Total
Gym allow a full range of motion as you workout. You can perform exercises
while sitting, kneeling or laying down on the glideboard. Plus depending on
which model is purchased, the Total Gym allows around 80 different workouts
to be performed. Another plus for the Total Gym is that as you workout you
also stretch the muscles.
Can I track how much weight I am lifting with the Total Gym?
Now the big question is how much
weight are you lifting. There is no reason to be in the dark on how much
weight you are lifting since the Total Gym comes with a chart that helps you
determine how much resistance you are using. The chart takes into
consideration your body weight, the machines incline level and whether or
not you ,the exerciser, is using the pulley system.
Our recommendation for those
considering the Total Gym
Overall the Total Gym is a good
piece of exercise equipment for toning and developing some muscle. However,
if your interest swing more towards bodybuilding or serious muscle building
then you we recommend that you pass on the Total Gym for some of the other
home gyms on the market. We personally feel that the Total Gym is really
geared towards those whose goals are more fitness related with overall
health and toning. If these goals reflect your interest then the Total Gym
is something you may want to consider.
