Body Fat Scales Review

Finding the best body fat monitor scale for you.

Body fat monitoring scales are very popular because they can easily calculate your weight and your body fat in one setting.  Most body fat monitor scales work by sending a safe electrical current through your body.  The electrical current is able to pass easier through lean muscle than body fat, so the amount of resistance the current faces is used to calculate the body density.  This is important because your body density, not your body fat,  is actually what is being measured.  The scales use a special formula to calculate your body fat percentage based on the results of your body density.

The scales cannot guarantee to be 100% accurate but realistically nothing your purchase is going to be that accurate.  A lot of scales are within 5% of accuracy to your true body fat percentage which should give you a good indication of where your health is.  All scales are different so check with the manufacture to see what percentage they fall under.

There are a few key things that you should consider when measuring your body fat.  The following suggestions will help increase the accuracy of your test:

  1. Make sure you use the right type of body fat scale.  There are scales for athletes, children, etc.
  2. Keep the time of the day that you measure yourself consistent.  If you normally take measurements in the morning then continue to take your measurements in the morning to ensure accurate results.  Keep in mind this is the same practice you should use when you measure your body weight.  However, we feel that when measuring body weight you should take the measurement after you wake up in the morning to get the most accurate results
  3. Avoid testing yourself after exercising.  Sweating effects the amount of water in your body composition which in turn effects the results of the test and will return inaccurate information.
  4. Try to monitor your skin temperature if possible.  Your temperature does have an effect on the electrical current.
  5. Clean to footpads to avoid a dirty surface affecting your results.

There are a variety of manufactures for the Body Fat Monitoring scales and some of the more familiar brands that you may have heard of are the Tanita, Tony Little and Weight Watchers scales.  The key is to find a scale the meets you and your family needs.  As we stated earlier, there are some scales that keep track of your information, some designed for athletes and others designed more for the family.  Of course the more features you want the higher the price so keep that in mind when you decide what features are right for you.

Outlined below we have put together a list of different types of body fat monitor scales.  Click on the links for the individual scales to find out more about what they offer.
